For most practices, comparing intraoral scanners is not really about finding the scanner with the longest feature list. It is about finding the system that fits your clinical mix, your operator team, your software preferences, and your growth plan over the next three to five years. Peer-reviewed reviews continue to report workflow and patient-comfort advantages for intraoral scanning in many use cases, but the right buying decision still comes down to day-to-day fit inside a real practice. ([pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8475874/?utm_source=openai))

To keep this useful, this guide narrows the field to four current systems that show up often in buying conversations: iTero Lumina, 3Shape TRIOS 5 Wireless, Medit i900, and Dentsply Sirona Primescan 2. Rather than score them in the abstract, the goal is to show where each one makes the most operational sense. ([itero.com](https://itero.com/our-solutions/itero-lumina?utm_source=openai))

How to read this comparison

If you are a general dentist or specialist, focus on scan ergonomics, indication support, and lab or aligner workflow. If you are a practice owner or office manager, pay equal attention to hardware requirements, portability, subscription dependencies, sterilization logistics, and whether multiple team members will use the scanner across rooms. Those factors usually affect ROI more than a small difference in headline scan speed.

Quick comparison: what stands out first

iTero Lumina

Strongest fit for practices that want tight Invisalign integration and built-in oral health visualization tools.
Published wand dimensions are 248.2 x 43.9 x 39.2 mm, with a published wand weight of 260 g.
Align positions it as an open system with STL and PLY export, but its biggest strategic advantage is still the Align ecosystem around Invisalign and related tools.

([itero.com](https://itero.com/our-solutions?utm_source=openai))

TRIOS 5 Wireless

Best match for practices that want wireless mobility, simplified scanning, and strong multi-room flexibility.
3Shape lists it at 26.6 x 3.8 x 3.7 cm and 299 g including battery.
Its workflow story is not only the scanner itself, but also the wider 3Shape Unite platform and options like TRIOS Share for using one wireless scanner across operatories.

([3shape.com](https://www.3shape.com/en-us/scanners/trios-5?utm_source=openai))

Medit i900

Best fit for practices that want a very light handpiece and an open digital workflow.
Medit lists the i900 at 223.4 x 36.7 x 35.3 mm and 165 g including the normal tip.
The published max field of view is 18 x 15 mm, and the scanner uses USB-C Power Delivery.

([medit.com](https://www.medit.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/MEDIT_i900_Brochure.pdf?utm_source=openai))

Primescan 2

Best fit for practices that want a wireless, cloud-centered scanner inside the Dentsply Sirona ecosystem.
Dentsply Sirona describes it as the first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution.
Primescan 2 requires a paid DS Core subscription, which is an important buying consideration before you compare it with more traditional local-hardware setups.

What each scanner is really optimized for

iTero Lumina: best for Invisalign-heavy practices

If your practice already depends on Invisalign volume, or plans to, iTero Lumina has the clearest strategic lane. Align markets Lumina around orthodontic and restorative use, but the practical differentiator is how closely the scanner connects to Invisalign workflows, progress tools, and patient-facing visualization. ([itero.com](https://itero.com/our-solutions/itero-lumina?utm_source=openai))

On hardware, Align publishes a smaller wand than older iTero configurations, with a 260 g wand weight and a 50 percent smaller wand claim versus the iTero Element 5D wand. Align also promotes a 3x larger field of view and 2x faster scans, though those are manufacturer claims tied to its stated comparison methods rather than head-to-head independent buying guidance. ([itero.com](https://itero.com/our-solutions?utm_source=openai))

For practice owners, the bigger issue is not the size claim. It is whether your scanner purchase is meant to strengthen an Invisalign-centered case mix. If yes, Lumina is easy to justify. If not, some of its value proposition may be underused.

One operational detail matters here: Align states that the iTero Lumina scanner in PC configuration is designed to work only with laptops that meet Align's published technical specifications, and certain support conditions apply to laptop sourcing and compliance. That means your IT planning should happen before purchase, not after. ([itero.com](https://itero.com/our-solutions/itero-lumina?utm_source=openai))

TRIOS 5 Wireless: best for multi-op practices that value mobility

TRIOS 5 Wireless is the most obviously mobility-first option in this group. 3Shape publishes it as its smallest and lightest scanner to date at 299 g including battery, and the scanner uses sensory cues and ScanAssist to simplify alignment during scanning. ([3shape.com](https://www.3shape.com/en-us/scanners/trios-5?utm_source=openai))

For office managers and treatment coordinators, the more important point is how well TRIOS 5 fits shared-use environments. 3Shape's TRIOS Share is specifically built around using compatible wireless TRIOS scanners across rooms, and 3Shape says the feature is available with TRIOS 3 Wireless, TRIOS 5 Wireless, or TRIOS 6 Wireless. For a practice trying to avoid buying a scanner for every operatory, that is not a small detail. ([3shape.com](https://www.3shape.com/en/software/trios-share?utm_source=openai))

Hygiene workflow is another differentiator. 3Shape support documentation states that the TRIOS 5 scanner tip can be re-sterilized up to 100 times, and that sterilization requires a Class B vacuum autoclave according to EN 13060. 3Shape also markets TRIOS 5 around a closed autoclavable tip design. Those details matter because infection-control convenience affects handoff speed between patients and between operators. ([support.3shape.com](https://support.3shape.com/products-trios-and-accessories-trios-5-how-to/cleaning-and-disinfectionsterilization-of-trios-5-system?utm_source=openai))

Another useful point for buyers is that 3Shape says TRIOS 5 and TRIOS 6 are calibration-free when used with TRIOS Ready Tips. For practices that want fewer setup interruptions, that is worth noting. ([3shape.com](https://www.3shape.com/en/scanners/accessories/ready-tips?utm_source=openai))

The main caution is simple: to get the full value from TRIOS 5 Wireless, your network and room flow need to support it. 3Shape's own support guidance includes specific wireless recommendations for reliable performance. A wireless scanner is only as convenient as the environment around it. ([support.3shape.com](https://support.3shape.com/trios-general/trios-wireless-scanner-does-not-connect?utm_source=openai))

Medit i900: best for lightweight handling and open workflow flexibility

Medit i900 stands out first on ergonomics. At a published 165 g including the normal tip, it is the lightest handpiece in this comparison by a wide margin, and that matters in practices where assistants or hygienists will scan repeatedly throughout the day. ([medit.com](https://www.medit.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/MEDIT_i900_Brochure.pdf?utm_source=openai))

Medit also publishes an 18 x 15 mm maximum field of view and three available tip sizes. The brochure lists full-arch accuracy at 10.9 microns plus or minus 0.98, though buyers should always remember that published accuracy figures depend heavily on the manufacturer's test conditions and do not replace real-world demos. ([medit.com](https://www.medit.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/MEDIT_i900_Brochure.pdf?utm_source=openai))

Where the i900 becomes especially attractive is workflow openness. Medit has built much of its market position around broad digital-dentistry compatibility rather than a closed treatment ecosystem. For many GP offices, implant practices, and labs that work across multiple systems, that openness can matter more than a proprietary feature set.

There is also a practical hardware note that should not be missed. Medit's current system requirements state that the i900 needs a USB-C port that supports Power Delivery. If the port does not support PD, the i900 cannot be used. That is exactly the kind of implementation detail that can delay onboarding if the office assumes any recent laptop will do the job. ([support.medit.com](https://support.medit.com/hc/en-us/articles/32695072794393--System-Requirements?utm_source=openai))

If you want Medit on an iPad-native workflow, note that this is not the standard i900 story. Medit says iPad scanning is available with the i900 Mobility using Medit Link Express, while the regular i900 is not listed for iPad scanning on the company's scanner comparison page. ([medit.com](https://www.medit.com/digital-dentistry-with-medit-scanners/?utm_source=openai))

Primescan 2: best for cloud-native Dentsply Sirona users

Primescan 2 is the most distinct platform concept in this group. Dentsply Sirona presents it as the first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution, and says scan data is captured directly on DS Core so the scanner can be used with any computer, laptop, tablet, or other mobile device with an internet connection. ([dentsplysirona.com](https://www.dentsplysirona.com/en-us/discover/discover-by-brand/primescan2.html?utm_source=openai))

That setup can be appealing for practices that want less dependence on a dedicated cart or room-bound workstation. At the same time, Dentsply Sirona is very clear that Primescan 2 requires a paid DS Core subscription. That should be treated as a core part of total cost and not as an add-on. ([dentsplysirona.com](https://www.dentsplysirona.com/en-us/discover/discover-by-brand/primescan2.html?utm_source=openai))

Dentsply Sirona also says Primescan 2 can complete a full-arch scan in less than one minute and supports both fluorescence and near-infrared 2D images. In the current instructions for use, the scanner is listed at 291 x 58 x 50.5 mm and 542 g operational with battery and disposable sleeve. ([dentsplysirona.com](https://www.dentsplysirona.com/en-us/discover/discover-by-brand/primescan2.html?utm_source=openai))

For some buyers, that weight will feel less appealing than the lighter options from Medit or 3Shape. But Primescan 2 should be judged more as a platform decision than a handpiece-only decision. If your practice already likes Dentsply Sirona's digital environment or wants a cloud-led setup, the product makes more sense. If you want the simplest local open-workflow scanner, it may not be your best fit.

Five buying questions that matter more than the brochure

1. Who will scan most often?

If scanning will be delegated heavily, ergonomics and setup simplicity matter a lot. Medit i900 and TRIOS 5 have especially clear ergonomic stories, while Primescan 2 and iTero Lumina may be more compelling when their ecosystem advantages are central to your strategy. ([medit.com](https://www.medit.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/MEDIT_i900_Brochure.pdf?utm_source=openai))

2. Is your growth plan restorative, aligner-driven, implant-driven, or mixed?

A scanner tied closely to your main production categories usually outperforms the most feature-rich scanner on paper. Invisalign-oriented growth points toward iTero Lumina. Multi-room general practice flexibility often points toward TRIOS 5 Wireless. Open restorative and implant workflow buyers often lean Medit. Cloud-led Dentsply Sirona users should look closely at Primescan 2.

3. Are you buying a scanner or an ecosystem?

This is where many demos hide the real decision. iTero Lumina, TRIOS 5 Wireless, Medit i900, and Primescan 2 all scan teeth. The harder question is what happens before and after the scan: case submission, aligners, cloud storage, lab communication, imaging, monitoring, printing, support, and upgrades. Those surrounding pieces often determine satisfaction more than scan quality alone.

4. What does implementation require from IT and sterilization?

Medit's USB-C Power Delivery requirement, 3Shape's network guidance for wireless use, Align's laptop compliance language for Lumina PC configuration, and Dentsply Sirona's DS Core dependency are all examples of practical details that can shape rollout speed. ([support.medit.com](https://support.medit.com/hc/en-us/articles/32695072794393--System-Requirements?utm_source=openai))

5. Can your team test real cases before signing?

Before buying, run a demo on the cases your practice actually does: a crowded lower anterior segment, a full-arch restorative case, an implant scanbody workflow, a pediatric gagger, and a hygiene-driven handoff between rooms. That will tell you more than a polished trade show demo.

The bottom line

There is no single best intraoral scanner for every dental practice in 2026. The better question is which scanner best supports the way your team already works and the way you want the practice to grow.

If you want the clearest Invisalign-centered strategy, start with iTero Lumina. If you want wireless flexibility across operatories, TRIOS 5 Wireless is hard to ignore. If lightweight ergonomics and open workflow matter most, Medit i900 is the most practical shortlist candidate. If you want a cloud-native Dentsply Sirona platform, Primescan 2 deserves a serious look. ([itero.com](https://itero.com/our-solutions/itero-lumina?utm_source=openai))

The safest buying move is simple: decide on your workflow first, then choose the scanner that supports it. Practices that do that usually make better digital investments than practices that buy on feature envy alone.
