The Practice That Lost Everything on a Tuesday

On an unremarkable Tuesday morning in 2025, a six-operatory dental practice in suburban Georgia arrived to find every computer screen displaying the same message: their files had been encrypted, and a ransom of $80,000 in cryptocurrency was demanded for the decryption key.

The practice's patient database — 14 years of clinical records, treatment histories, radiographic images, insurance information, and financial data — was inaccessible. The backup server, connected to the same network, had been encrypted as well. The NAS device that held their imaging archive was locked.

The practice was closed for seven business days.
