Why these dental product updates matter

"Product updates" can mean almost anything in dentistry. New scanners arrive with bigger claims. Software gets smarter. Materials expand indications. Printers get faster. The real question for a practice owner or office leader is simpler: what actually changes day-to-day operations?

That is the filter used here. Instead of trying to cover every launch across the market, this guide focuses on a small group of recent updates that have a clear connection to workflow, patient communication, restorative planning, or in-house production.

Several themes stand out. First, intraoral scanning is moving beyond basic digital impressions into cloud workflows, restorative planning, and integrated diagnostics. Second, imaging software is leaning harder into AI-assisted organization and planning. Third, chairside and lab-side printing continue to move toward higher-speed, higher-volume production with broader validated material options.

For general dentists, specialists, office managers, treatment coordinators, and dental marketers, these are the product updates most likely to influence purchasing conversations through late 2026.

1) Align iTero Lumina moves the scanner conversation toward speed, access, and multidisciplinary workflows

Align Technology introduced the iTero Lumina intraoral scanner on January 31, 2024. The company positioned it as a next-generation platform with a 3x wider field of capture, a wand that is 50% smaller, and a maximum capture distance of up to 25 mm.

That matters because scanner adoption does not rise on headline specs alone. It rises when the scanner is easier for more team members to use, more comfortable for patients, and more forgiving in difficult areas of the mouth.

In March 2025, Align expanded the platform by announcing restorative capabilities for the iTero Lumina scanner and introducing the iTero Lumina Pro dental imaging system with Near Infra-Red Imaging, or NIRI, to support interproximal caries detection above the gingiva.

What changed in practical terms

The product story is no longer only about orthodontic workflows. The restorative release turned Lumina into a more direct conversation for GP practices that want one scanner platform to support diagnostics, restorative planning, and ortho-restorative case presentation.

For treatment coordinators, that is significant. A scanner that can help support both clear aligner and restorative discussions can reduce the need to jump between disconnected systems during the same patient visit.

Who should pay attention

General practices that want one digital front door for ortho and restorative cases
Offices trying to improve scan delegation across multiple team members
Clinicians who want easier capture in complex or hard-to-reach areas

Bottom line

The iTero Lumina update is less about adding another scanner to the market and more about broadening what one scanner can do inside a modern GP workflow.

2) Dentsply Sirona Primescan 2 pushes cloud-native scanning from concept to buying criterion

Dentsply Sirona announced Primescan 2 on September 5, 2024, describing it as the first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution. It is also wireless and designed to work without a dedicated scanning computer, allowing scans to be captured on internet-connected desktop or mobile devices through DS Core.

That is a meaningful shift because many scanner comparisons still focus on speed, tip size, and image quality while overlooking setup friction. In the real world, practices often struggle just as much with hardware placement, operatory flexibility, and where scan files actually go after capture.

At IDS 2025, Dentsply Sirona announced further Primescan 2 updates, including a dedicated cart, caries detection functionality, and reduced internet requirements.

Why this matters operationally

Cloud-native design changes room planning. Practices that do not want to dedicate a full cart-and-monitor setup to every scanning location may find this model attractive. For multi-op offices, that can support more flexible use of space and reduce bottlenecks around one “digital room.”

It also changes onboarding. If your team already works across connected devices and cloud platforms, the scanner becomes less of a stand-alone island and more of a shared workflow tool.

Questions buyers should ask

How dependent is your current workflow on a fixed scanning station?
How strong is your practice internet reliability in all operatories?
Will cloud-based case access improve communication with labs or remote decision-makers?
Do your doctors want mobility, or do they still prefer a traditional cart workflow?

Bottom line

Primescan 2 is important because it makes deployment model part of the scanner decision. In 2026, that is no longer a minor detail.

3) Planmeca Romexis 7 shows how AI updates are becoming workflow features, not side tools

Planmeca announced Romexis 7 availability on June 27, 2025, with built-in AI-powered features as standard. The initial release included automatic segmentation of patient anatomies, cephalometric landmark detection, automatic fitting of CBCT images and intraoral scans, automated implant planning proposals, and AI chat help.

Then, on January 20, 2026, Planmeca announced that Romexis 7 release 6.5.2 expanded those AI-powered capabilities into intraoral imaging. The update added automatic tooth number recognition, image rotation, and placement of intraoral images into study templates.

Why this matters more than it may seem

Many offices underestimate how much time is lost after the image is taken. The hidden labor often sits in organizing images, checking numbering, preparing studies, and getting everything presentation-ready for diagnosis or case discussion.

That is why AI updates like this are worth watching. They are not flashy in the same way a new scanner launch is flashy, but they can remove repetitive clicks from every day of the week.

Best-fit practices

Busy general practices with high hygiene imaging volume
Offices standardizing imaging protocols across multiple providers
Specialty practices that need better integration between 2D, 3D, and planning workflows

Manager takeaway

If your team spends too much time cleaning up image sets after capture, software automation may deliver more value than another piece of hardware. Romexis 7 is a good example of why software updates deserve the same attention as equipment launches.

4) Formlabs Form 4B raises expectations for in-house dental printing speed

Formlabs launched the Form 4B on April 17, 2024, as its flagship dental resin printer built around the company’s Low Force Display print engine. The company says the platform can deliver most parts in under two hours and offers print speeds up to five times faster than the prior generation.

For practices and labs that have delayed in-house printing because of production time, this is one of the more relevant updates in the current digital dentistry cycle.

What makes this update notable

Speed is only useful if it comes with predictable workflow. Form 4B is not just about faster models. It was launched alongside broader ecosystem updates, including post-processing changes and ongoing material expansion.

In practical terms, faster print cycles can support more same-day or next-day planning for models, guides, splints, and denture-related applications, depending on the office or lab setup.

Who should evaluate it carefully

Practices considering their first serious in-house print workflow
Offices currently outsourcing simple printed applications because turnaround is acceptable but not ideal
Labs looking for higher throughput without jumping immediately into more complex industrial systems

Bottom line

The Form 4B update matters because it lowers one of the biggest barriers to adoption: waiting too long for useful output.

5) Formlabs Premium Teeth Resin and Denture Base Resin V2 expand the denture and provisional conversation

Material updates often matter more than printer updates. That is especially true when new indications move a workflow from experimental to commercially practical.

On August 6, 2024, Formlabs announced that Premium Teeth Resin received FDA 510(k) clearance for temporary single-unit crowns, inlays, onlays, veneers, and bridges of up to seven units in the United States. The FDA decision date for the 510(k), K240538, was July 19, 2024.

That broadened the resin beyond denture teeth and temporary full-arch implant-supported restorations into a wider set of provisional restorative applications.

Then in 2026, Formlabs introduced Denture Base Resin V2 for the Form 4 platform. The company describes it as a high-impact, biocompatible denture base material compatible with Form 4B and Form 4BL printers. Its product page lists a starting price of $549, and Formlabs reports flexural strength of 67 MPa and flexural modulus of 2200 MPa. FDA records show Denture Base Resin V2 received a substantial equivalence decision on July 8, 2026 under 510(k) K262300.

Why this is important for practices and labs

Digital denture and provisional workflows are only attractive when the materials are validated, the indications are clear, and the production steps fit real throughput demands. These updates strengthen that case.

For a GP office that wants to expand same-visit or short-turnaround provisionals, material validation matters. For a lab focused on removable, denture base durability and production consistency matter even more.

What to ask before investing

Which applications will you actually produce in-house every week?
Do you have staff capacity for finishing, washing, curing, and quality control?
Are you solving a turnaround problem, a margin problem, or both?
Will you use a validated closed workflow, an open material approach, or a mix?

Bottom line

The 2024 to 2026 Formlabs material updates are a reminder that the true buying decision is often not printer first. It is application first.

6) Prime&Bond active shows that restorative material updates still deserve attention

Not every meaningful update is digital. Dentsply Sirona launched Prime&Bond active Universal Adhesive on June 26, 2024. The product is indicated for all etching methods and is built around the company’s patented Active-Guard technology, which is designed to actively control moisture on the prepared surface.

That may sound less dramatic than a scanner or printer release, but restorative products can produce some of the fastest day-to-day workflow effects because they influence consistency in procedures teams already perform constantly.

Why it stands out

Moisture management remains one of the routine pressure points in adhesive dentistry. A product positioned around reliable performance across varying dentin moisture levels is not just a chemistry story. It is also a training and repeatability story.

For office managers, that matters when evaluating product changes. A material that reduces technique sensitivity can affect remakes, chair time, and clinical confidence faster than a large capital purchase.

Bottom line

When people talk about dental product updates, the market tends to over-focus on hardware. Adhesives, cements, and other restorative materials still deserve a seat in the conversation because they touch a much larger share of routine dentistry.

How to evaluate product updates without getting distracted by launch marketing

If your team is reviewing new dental products in late 2026, a simple framework helps keep discussions grounded.

Start with the bottleneck

Do not ask which launch is most impressive. Ask which step in your current workflow is slow, inconsistent, hard to delegate, or difficult to explain to patients.

Match the update to one measurable outcome

Choose one metric before you buy. Examples include scan completion rate, time from prep to provisional, number of outsourced models per month, image organization time, or remakes tied to adhesive technique sensitivity.

Separate clinical value from platform value

A product may be clinically strong but still a poor fit if it does not match your existing software, lab relationships, staffing model, or room setup.

Look for adoption risk, not just purchase price

The biggest hidden cost is often underuse. A scanner no one delegates, a printer no one wants to post-process, or software features no one activates can turn a good product into a bad investment.

Involve the non-doctor users early

Office managers, assistants, hygienists, and treatment coordinators often see workflow friction earlier than the dentist does. Their input is especially important when the update affects setup, scheduling, patient communication, or case handoff.

The bigger trend behind these updates

Across scanners, imaging platforms, printers, and materials, the market is moving in the same direction: fewer disconnected steps, more automation, and broader use cases from a single platform.

That does not mean every practice needs to buy immediately. It does mean buyers should evaluate new products less as isolated equipment and more as pieces of a connected production system.

The most successful investments over the next cycle will likely come from practices that choose a narrow problem to solve, then buy the product update that removes friction from that exact problem.

Final take

The most relevant dental product updates right now are not necessarily the ones with the biggest booth presence or the loudest launch language. They are the ones that make a workflow easier to perform, easier to delegate, easier to explain, or easier to scale.

That is why recent updates like iTero Lumina, Primescan 2, Romexis 7, Form 4B, new Formlabs dental materials, and Prime&Bond active deserve attention. Each points to a practical shift in how modern dentistry is being delivered.

For practice owners and operational leaders, that is the real signal worth following.
