The intraoral scanner market has exploded over the past five years, with new players challenging established giants like iTero, 3Shape, and Planmeca. But with prices ranging from $15,000 to $50,000, choosing the wrong system can be a costly mistake that impacts your practice for years.

We partnered with three prosthodontists and two general dentists to conduct the most comprehensive scanner comparison to date. Over six months, we scanned 847 patients across various clinical scenarios—from single-tooth restorations to full-arch implant cases.

Methodology: How We Tested

Each scanner was evaluated on five key metrics: marginal accuracy (measured against laboratory-verified models), scan speed, powder-free performance, software usability, and total cost of ownership including tips and maintenance.

We used a standardized protocol across all scanners, with the same operators performing calibrated scans on the same patients whenever possible. Stone models were created from traditional impressions as our gold standard comparison.

The Surprising Winner in Accuracy

The Medit i700 Wireless achieved marginal discrepancies averaging just 23 microns—statistically equivalent to the $45,000 iTero Element 5D and significantly better than the $38,000 3Shape TRIOS 4. At under $20,000, it delivered premium performance at mid-tier pricing.

However, the iTero excelled in posterior scanning and handled saliva contamination more gracefully. For practices doing significant same-day restorations, the seamless integration with Invisalign workflows still gives iTero an edge for orthodontic-focused offices.

Speed Test Results

Full-arch scan times varied dramatically. The Primescan captured a complete upper arch in an average of 58 seconds—nearly half the time of the TRIOS 4. But speed isn't everything: the Primescan's aggressive capture algorithm occasionally required rescanning when patients moved unexpectedly.

The sweet spot was the Medit i700, which completed full arches in 72 seconds with a 94% first-attempt success rate. For busy practices seeing 20+ restorative patients daily, those extra 14 seconds are offset by fewer retakes.

Our Recommendations by Practice Type

For general practices doing primarily single-unit restorations: The Medit i700 offers the best value proposition with excellent accuracy and reasonable ongoing costs.

For orthodontic practices: iTero Element 5D remains the gold standard due to Align Technology integration, despite the premium price.

For prosthodontic practices: Primescan's handling of implant scan bodies and full-arch accuracy justifies its higher price point for complex rehabilitations.

The bottom line: Scanner technology has commoditized significantly. The $30,000+ premium for flagship models is increasingly hard to justify for most clinical applications.
