iTero Lumina

Align launched the iTero Lumina scanner on January 31, 2024 and later expanded Lumina with restorative capabilities. The headline hardware claims are easy to remember: a 50% smaller wand, 45% lighter wand, and a 3x wider field of capture than the prior generation reference used by Align. On iTero’s current comparison materials, the Lumina wand is listed at 260 g and dimensions of 248.2 mm by 43.9 mm by 39.2 mm.

Medit i900

Medit positions the i900 as a lightweight, open-system scanner for practices that want flexibility without a required recurring scanner subscription. The official i900 brochure lists a 165 g handpiece including the normal tip, full-arch accuracy of 10.9 µm ± 0.98, USB-C Power Delivery cables, and three tip sizes, including a smaller tip sold separately.

Medit also emphasizes that the i900 package includes Medit Link and states there are no hidden fees or ongoing subscriptions in the package itself.

Primescan 2

Primescan 2 is Dentsply Sirona’s wireless, cloud-connected scanning platform. The biggest distinction is architectural: Primescan 2 is designed around direct-to-cloud workflow through DS Core rather than the traditional scanner-plus-local-workstation model. Dentsply Sirona states that Primescan 2 requires a paid subscription to DS Core.

For practices already using the Dentsply Sirona restorative ecosystem, that cloud-first design can be a strength. For practices that want a more self-contained or lower-commitment software model, it deserves a closer look before buying.

iTero Lumina: more open than many people assume, but still ecosystem-led

It is worth updating an old market assumption here. iTero is still strongly associated with Invisalign, but Align also states that iTero supports open restorative workflows and STL or PLY export. Dentsply Sirona states that Primescan 2 requires a paid DS Core subscription. Medit’s i900 brochure states that its tips are autoclavable up to 150 times, depending on the sterilization protocol listed by the manufacturer. That will appeal to practices that carefully track accessory life and replacement cost.

Dentsply Sirona’s Primescan 2 documentation includes both multiuse and disposable sleeve options. That gives practices more than one approach depending on turnover preferences and infection-control protocol.
